Practicing yoga to relieve joint and arthritis pain. It sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it?  It doesn’t seem like yoga would be the go-to solution to help with joint pain and arthritis.  After all, yoga involves A LOT of twisting and turning and that involves the use of joints – and that could be uncomfortable.  Keep reading because we are going to give you 4 reasons why yoga might just be the thing you need if you suffer from joint pain and arthritis.

Yoga is easy on the joints and gives both physical and psychological advantages, according to research. Regular yoga practice can help you build muscle strength and joint flexibility while also increasing your mood and reducing stress. 

 

REASON 2: 

It’s either you use it or lose it.

The increasing prevalence of arthritis and joint pain nowadays may be best explained by the current sedentary lifestyle, rather than a condition induced by too much activity. Sedentary people’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments deteriorate and can’t support their joints adequately. Furthermore, frequent movement is required to circulate synovial fluid throughout the joints, a slippery liquid that nourishes and heals cartilage.  Yoga is a gentle, enjoyable exercise that can help tone and maintain muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the body.

 

REASON 3:

Yoga was found to assist individuals with osteoarthritis reduce pain and stiffness more effectively than regular physical therapy in one research. Another research found that practicing yoga three times a week reduced pain and increased overall health, energy, and mental health in people with knee osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory autoimmune disease. Yoga has also been shown to reduce pain and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis of the hands, as well as lessen joint pain in breast cancer survivors in other studies.

 

REASON 4:

One of the most underrated benefits of yoga is learning how to breathe.  Breathing exercises and techniques help us relax.  When we are relaxed, we release tension in our muscles.  Just this one adjustment can lessen pain in joints we don’t even realize are contracted due to stress.
