Restorative yoga teaches us the ability to turn on our relaxation response

When we experience stress and tension, our bodies go into flight or fight mode.  Staying in the flight or fight mode is taxing on our body – putting tension on our organs.  Restorative yoga can help!  When we are in a stressful situation, we can “turn on” a relaxation response, telling our body that we are in a safe place.  Once the body is relaxed, it is able to heal itself, become creative, and productive. The ability to turn on our relaxation response when needed is critical to not only our brains and heart but also for functions like digestion, immunity, and long-term health.

Restorative yoga is a collection of poses that require the body to hold a pose long term and in many cases doing so through the use of supports and bolsters.  This type of yoga teaches the mind and body to identify what full relaxation feels like.  Many describe this type of yoga as meditative.  Calling on this type of yoga practice at any time can be incredibly healing and of course relaxing!
