acupuncture-bigGoing through surgery is no easy task.  It would be wonderful if we could go through surgery and have it behind us.  That is just not the case.  Recovery is what lies ahead after surgery.  Depending on the type of surgery can determine the length and the pain one must endure during the recovery process.

The good news is, East West Healing Solutions is not only equipped to assist with pain relief related to post operative surgery but we also specialize in pain management.  We have many techniques and modalities we can use to help patients recover from surgery.  Some of the techniques are manual therapies like massage and others are through acupuncture.

It may seem counter intuitive to rely on needles to help relieve pain.  Some people see needles as a source of pain.  Many think about the pain induced from vaccination needles, IV needles and even the needles used to draw blood.  Acupuncture needles are actually quite different and believe it or not, can be a pleasant relaxing experience.

The size of an acupuncture needle has been compared to a strand of hair.  Imagine how thin that needle is!  Most don’t even feel the insertion of the needle into the skin.

While that is all very comforting to hear, it is what the needle is doing once inserted into the skin is what is exciting!

A quick lesson on acupuncture…

acupuncture needlesAccording to acupuncture practitioners, there are more than 2,000 of these points on the body. These points are connected by pathways or meridians, which create a flow of energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”). It is believed that stimulating these points on the body will correct the imbalance of qi and improve the flow of energy, resulting in pain relief and overall improved health.

It is also believed that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system and may trigger the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.  The chemical release may change the sensation of pain and a person’s overall feeling of well-being.

Now, let’s apply this concept to pain.  Imagine that our body’s have pathways which energy travels through.  We experience pain when these energy pathways become blocked.  To unblock the pathway and to relieve the pain, thin needles are inserted into these pathways.  The needles stimulate the blockages in an attempt to open up the pathways again.  When stimulating these pathways, acupuncture may also release natural pain relieving opioids, send signals to the sympathetic nervous system and release neuro-chemicals and hormones needed to relieve pain.

Acupuncture is a safe, chemical free way to help heal your body and relieve pain.  Contact our office for a free consultation about the pain management programs we have to help you recover after surgery.
